About Serbian Statistics

      The first signs of modern statistical activity, on the territory of today's Serbia, should be looked for in the census activity of the first half of 19th century. Namely, in the 1834 Census, for the first time the counting over population was carryed out, in the different way from similar actions which were in the past mostly used for tax and military affairs. Since that time till the First World war, population censuses were often, almost at every 5 or 6 years.

      Modern foundations of Serbian statistics were laid down in 1863, since when statistical data were sistematically collected in different fields of social and economic life, and also particular surveys were done. Written sources tell that already in 1881, the low by which the Department for official statistics was constituted, and that in 10 years latter, the Department for state statistics of Kingdom of Serbia was also established. Since then Serbian statistics was definitely going through expert and scientific way and was soon recognised by International Statistical Institute. In united Yugoslavia (1918) Serbian satistics brought in own rich statistical experience and developed statistical culture.
       Today's Rebulic Statistical Office of Serbia is a contemporary organised expert organisation, with indented network of own departments in almost all significant cities across the Repubic of Serbia. This Office conducts about 200 statistical surveys yearly, and results of those, publishes in different publications and studies, as well as in the electronic media. The Office successfully execute all it's tasks, above all thanks to highly qualified personnel and using of modern equipment for processing, transmission, printing and using the data.
       In Rebulic Statistical Office of Serbia is residence of Serbian Statistical Association, which, beside of statisticians, gather also and representatives of eminent scientific-research's, state's and other institutions in the country.
